What P2440 usually means
P2440 is one of the most recognizable modern secondary-air codes because it points to the switching valve on Bank 1 staying open or bleeding when commanded off. That matters because the valve is supposed to isolate the pump and pressure side from hot exhaust when the system is not actively injecting air. If it sticks open, exhaust heat and condensation can travel where they should not, damage pumps and sensors, and create repeated cold-start monitor failures. On vehicles known for this fault, the real job is to decide whether the valve is mechanically hung open, its control path is keeping it open, or the pressure feedback is being fooled by contamination already caused by the stuck-open condition.
